Hate Crime Awareness Week (10.10.26 - 17.10.26)

Hate Crime Awareness Week (10.10.26 - 17.10.26)

I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Hate Crime (a crime motivated by disability, racial, religious, sexual, or other prejudice), which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey.

As part of Hate Crime Awareness Week, Cardiff City Centre Neighbourhood Policing Team has been working alongside local businesses and venues to raise awareness of hate crime and the support available to those affected. Officers recently visited several city centre premises to provide hate crime awareness posters and information to staff.

Creating safe, inclusive communities is a shared responsibility. We encourage residents, businesses and visitors to stand together against hate crime by supporting victims, challenging prejudice where safe to do so, and reporting incidents when they occur.

Nobody should feel unsafe because of who they are. Hate crime can have a significant impact on individuals and communities, and we remain committed to supporting victims and working with our partners to ensure Cardiff remains a welcoming place for everyone.

If you have been affected by hate crime, or have witnessed an incident, please report it to South Wales Police so that appropriate support can be provided.

A hate crime is defined as any criminal offence that is perceived to be motivated by hostility or prejudice, based on disability, race, religion, transgender identity, or sexual orientation. This includes causing harassment, alarm, or distress.

Hate incidents:

Not all behaviour complained of will reach the threshold for being defined as a crime and therefore may be categorised as a non-crime hate incident (NCHI). This means an incident or alleged incident which involves or is alleged to involve an act by a person which is perceived to be motivated - wholly or partly - by hostility or prejudice towards persons with a particular characteristic.

A “particular characteristic”, for the purposes of NCHI recording, means a characteristic that is protected under hate crime legislation:

If you ever experience this issue or have information regarding an incident, please report it using our online reporting tools at https://www.south-wales.police.uk, speak to an operator in our Force Communications Room via our online web chat or call the non-emergency number 101.

Alternatively, you can stay 100 per cent anonymous by contacting the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or via their untraceable online form at crimestoppers-uk.org.
